Edinburgh University Students’ Association was the first in the UK to offer student-led Teaching Awards and our Awards are now in their 12th year.

Staff play a pivotal role in the student experience at Edinburgh, from lecturers and tutors, to supervisors and Personal Tutors, and professional services staff.

Our annual Teaching Awards provide students with an opportunity to thank staff for their hard work and celebrate the very best of teaching and support at the University, something that’s more important than ever this academic year.

Nominations mean so much to staff, so take five minutes before nominations close on April 5 2021 to say thank you to the staff who’ve shaped your time at University so far.

In the past 12 years, over 20,000 nominations have been submitted, putting a smile on staff members’ faces. The Teaching Awards also serve to highlight and reward best practice in teaching and student support, reminding us all of the value of investing in student experience.

In 2015, a thematic analysis was conducted of Teaching Award comments, resulting in the “What does good teaching look like to students?” report which you can read here

All students - whether you’re Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught or Postgraduate Research, on-campus or online, studying full or part-time - can nominate.

You can nominate the same staff member in multiple categories. You can also nominate multiple staff for the same category, or in different categories.

There are 8 categories in this year’s Teaching Awards:

  • Support Staff of the Year

  • Personal Tutor of the Year

  • Outstanding Commitment to Social Justice and Sustainability

  • Student Tutor of the Year

  • Supervisor of the Year

  • Teacher of the Year

All staff employed by the University – whether salaried or hourly – can be nominated, and you can select the category you feel best suits the nominee by reading the category descriptions here.

Once you submit your nomination it will be checked by our team, and then an email will be sent out to the staff member you’ve nominated letting them know and sharing your comments, anonymously.

All nominees are eligible to be shortlisted, and the winners will be announced in an online ceremony on May 12, 2021.

The Teaching Awards are entirely student-led, so the judging panel is made up entirely of student volunteers. The judging panel base their decisions on the quality of nominations, not the quantity, so make sure you take your time letting us know why you think your nominee should win.

Absolutely! Whether you’re a staff member, a student representative, or just passionate about great teaching we’d love for you to encourage students to submit their nominations. You can find a range of graphics for use in promotion here
