We are a group of University students in Edinburgh aiming to raise awareness and funds for Mary's Meals. We are all drawn to the simple message of Mary's Meals and how they provide hope to children, not too dissimilar from us.
There are over 300 million chronically hungry children in the world. Most of these children don't have the chance to go to school - their priority is to survive.
Mary's Meals is a Scottish charity that was started in 1992, and has since grown from a small organisation into a global movement. The idea behind Mary's Meals is simple: the charity sets up school feeding projects in some of the poorest communities in the world, and these feeding project provide one daily meal to the most vulnerable children in the world every school day. With the help of local volunteers and by using local produce, it costs Mary's Meals only £15.90 to feed a child for a whole year.
Providing the meals at school means that as well as receiving nourishment and care, the children are also able to receive an education. In 2002, Mary's Meals began with feeding 200 children in Malawi. In 2020 Mary's Meals has contributed to feeding 1,667,067 children in 19 countries across 6 contintents. For every pound given to Mary's Meals, a minimum of 93p is spent on their charitable activities.
And you can help! The Mary's Meals Edinburgh Society arranges a number of different fundraising and awareness events throughout the year, and we're always looking for new members to bring fresh ideas and energy to our society.
