Where should I live?
The best way to start your flat hunting is by deciding where you want to live. This can be difficult if you are not familiar with Edinburgh, so we have created an interactive map to introduce you to some of the areas that are popular with students in Edinburgh. This map also shows you where the main campuses are situated, as well as the location of all university accommodations and some private student accommodations.
Once you've noted the areas you'd like to live in, you can look at availability and prices online and it’s also worth taking a stroll around those neighbourhoods to get a feel of the place and the type of properties that are on offer.
We often find that students struggle to secure a flat if they restrict their search to the areas very close to the central campus to just the Marchmont area. These areas are very popular with students and very close to campus but demand and prices are high. Many students live in other areas of the city too where there can be less competition and less cost involved. Watch our video series below to discover some wonderful neighbourhoods in Edinburgh.
The prices listed here were compiled in September 2018. Prices will change, so please check. The majority of these websites will allow you to get a quote in a currency you’re familiar with.
In most cases a dormitory (dorm) room will be cheaper. This will mean sharing a room with people who you don’t know. You will usually get a locker or secure space to lock your valuables — you can check this when you are booking your room.
Remember, it is ok to ask to see a room before you book it.
