EconPALS is the economics peer-assisted learning scheme, dedicated to first year students. EconPALS consists of trained volunteers (PALS leaders), who plan and facilitate study sessions for a small group of students on a regular basis.

The PALS Leaders are all second, third and fourth year Economics students who share their experience in Economics 1 and relate to the challenges of a first-year university degree in Economics. In our sessions the learning approach is not like the lecture-theatre - leaders facilitate the learning by encouraging collaboration between students, guiding the discussion and topics in a fun and relaxed environment.

All sessions are inclusive; there’s no such thing as a silly question, the chances are all the leaders have asked that question themselves in the past! New this year, students will have the opportunity to let lecturers know in real time the topics they struggle the most with. Your lecturers will create video tutorials on this material exclusively for EconPALS students! You’ll also be able to ask lecturers about what they look for in the course in our sessions specifically working on essay-writing and exam technique.

We are very proud to also be a massive part of the Economics community. Throughout the year we run delegations from the university to Economics summits across the UK, giving you the opportunity to see some of the world’s leading thinkers in their fields talking about topical issues, from policy to robotics!

Expect to find us leading the pack in all sorts of social events in the economics society and school of economics, some more academic than others… We run five sessions per week, at 90 minutes in length. Heading into its fourth year, EconPALS is now hundreds of members strong, and last year was the recipient of the 2017 Impact Awards Best PAL Scheme in the University. In exams in the first semester, regular attendees of sessions averaged more than 20% higher than non-attendees, and have recorded excellent feedback about what we do. All our sessions are completely free and optional!

Due to high demand, EconPALS has expanded to include second-year economics students in StudyPALS! With the same goals in mind, StudyPALS consists of very small study groups, led by volunteers in the same course, with a focus on collaboration and building study skills vital for later years. The meetings will be relaxed and friendly, and are open to all second year economics students! For more information, find us on Facebook at or email us at
