UNDERGRADUATE PEER SUPPORT AT THE BUSINESS SCHOOL
We’re really looking forward to September and to meeting our new Business School undergraduate students! Along with the other Schools at the University of Edinburgh, the Business School offers Peer Support to new students transitioning to University from school, college, maybe from a Gap year or as a mature student. All student journeys are different and our fully trained Peer Support students (BizPALS) offer support and guidance to you when you start here at the Business School.
HOW CAN BIZPALS HELP YOU AT THE BUSINESS SCHOOL?
STUDY- Our BizPALS and Accountancy PALS are part of the Business School’s undergraduate peer support group. They are essentially a team of students who volunteer their time to ensure you get the most out of your first year at university, and offer friendly academic support for your first year courses. BizPALS sessions will run weekly throughout Semester 1 and into Semester 2 and provide advice and tips from their own experiences. AccountancyPALS will also hold weekly sessions throughout the semester to assist you with any challenges you face within the core Accountancy course.
PS We’re very proud that BizPALS Accountancy 1A won the Edinburgh University Students' Association Impact Awards Best PALS scheme in 2016, and were runners up for the Best New Scheme award. No question is a silly question to our BizPALS or Accountancy PALS - they are there to help in any way they can.
SUPPORT – Our BizBuddies provide social support and advice throughout the year, starting in Welcome week with events for our all our new students, and we have events planned specially for those living at home (sign up at Eventbrite Home Zone ), and also for our international students (see timetable for Welcome Week).
BizBuddies is a relatively new peer support scheme to the Business School. Essentially the aim is to create academic families within the school by pairing you with a Buddy in Year 2, 3 or 4, ideally in your degree programme, who can provide social support and advice throughout the year. This is a much less structured and more informal scheme - you can meet your BizBuddy for coffee or you can simply drop them an email now and again with any questions relating to university life that are playing on your mind. The BizBuddies team organizes various social events throughout the year to build a sense of community within The Business School - so keep an eye out and get involved! You can sign up with BizBuddies during Welcome Week at the Welcome Zone (Welcome Week timetable, or on the Freshers Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/UEBSFreshers1718/
BizPALS and BizBuddies will be around during Welcome Week and Semester 1 to help you get the most from your first few weeks. They are keen to meet you and provide real insight into studying at the University of Edinburgh Business School. The BizPALS and BizBuddies will be running an orientation tour directly after your welcome talk on Tuesday 12th September. it’s a good way to meet new people and get familiar with the campus. You’ll also be invited on our Treasure Hunt (sign up at Eventbrite Treasure Hunt , and to sign up for the Business Society’s social events. You can keep in touch with BizPALS and other Freshers through our Freshers’ Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/UEBSFreshers1718/ which is counting down to Welcome Week from August onwards. Our BizBuddies will be connecting new students with Buddies (all welcome, whether you are international, from Europe or the UK, or even from just down the road in Edinburgh).
SEMESTER ONE : BizPALS leaders will be leading study sessions on the core Business course throughout Semester 1. They will help with study tips that they found useful, and will signpost you towards the solution to any issues that need resolution. Accountancy 1A PALS will run sessions each week, keeping you up to date and grounded with the Accountancy 1A course. Top tip – don’t miss the tutorials!
SEMESTER TWO: BizPALS and Accountancy PALS will be running some further sessions during Semester 2 – more information to follow!
