The Edinburgh University One Health society is a newly formed society for 2015!

As a society, we aim to generate an increased awareness and interest in the 'One Health' concept amongst the veterinary, medicine, and biology students and staff.

What is One Health?

Whereas traditionally human, animal, and environmental health are treated as separate entities, the One Health approach is based on the underlying concept that these three areas are deeply interconnected - and to solve a problem in the health of one, all three must be addressed.
In our ever-more complex world in which the climate is changing; globalisation has drawn continents together; biodiversity is being lost;the population has exploded; and food is produced in vast monocultures and factory farms, a human disease outbreak can no longer be treated by a doctor alone. Modern global health issues require communication between many disciplines - medical and scientific- and increased sharing of knowledge. The 'One Health' school of thought has had praise from the medical and more general scientific communities and is now being incorporated in many Universities (for example at the Edinburgh university there is now a Masters degree programme in One Health).

What do we do?

This coming year we will be hosting a series of talks on One Health topics - such as zoonotic diseases, the effects of climate change decreasing biodiversity, antibiotic resistance and the future of pharmaceuticals, and food production and its effects on the environment, animal health and public health.
We are also hoping to host some debates, discussions and seminars -  working with other Global Health related societies too.

Keep an eye on the events section of this website and on our facebook page for details of talks: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1512781595679648/?fref=ts

Get Involved!

If you are studying medicine, veterinary medicine, a biological science degree - or are just interested in these topics - then come along to our events!

The society will be a great platform to provide a sharing of information between disciplines, where we will be able to learn from the different perspectives of students on other courses. If you are doing research into One Health related subjects in the university then we would love to have you come and share what you are are researching and network with other researchers.

Look out for us at the medic, vet and main university freshers fairs!
