NUS Liberation Conferences 2018

What are the NUS Liberation Conferences?

In the same way that the Students' Association represents you at the University level, the National Union of Students (NUS) represents you at the national level, both in Scotland and the UK.

Like the Students' Association, NUS has Liberation Campaigns representing students from marginalised groups and lobbying on their behalf to make Further and Higher Education more inclusive and accessible. Each Campaign holds an annual democratic conference where priorities for the year are set through motions debates and Officers are elected to lead the Campaign - the Students' Association sends delegates to these conferences to ensure Edinburgh students' voices are heard.

How can I get involved?

There are two key ways you can get involved in the NUS Liberation Campaign conferences: by writing motions and by attending the conferences as a delegate.

If you have an idea for a motion which you would like the Students' Association to submit to one or more of the conferences, please read through the guidance below and contact sarah.moffat@eusa.ed.ac.uk as soon as possible to discuss this.

If you would like to attend one or more of the conferences you can nominate yourself using the forms linked below. If elected the Students' Association will register you and pay your registration fee, as well as any expenses.

Why should I attend a NUS Liberation Conference?

  • Being a BME, disabled, LGBT+ or woman student at a university like Edinburgh can often be a lonely experience, particularly if you are passionate about social justice. NUS Liberation Conferences are an opportunity to meet students like you from across Scotland and the UK, building up a network of solidarity and support.

  • At NUS Liberation Conferences, you'll hear students from a wide variety of backgrounds and institutions discuss and debate contemporary issues, from liberating the curriculum to trans inclusion in sport, sexual harassment on campus to financial support for disabled students. You'll also have the opportunity to decide who leads the Campaign for the coming year, and you could even stand to sit on one of the national Liberation Campaign Committees.

  • As well as motions debates and elections, you'll also have the opportunity to hear speakers, watch panel discussions, and attend workshops. You'll learn about upcoming campaigns and opporunities to get involved throughout the year - we guarantee you'll come back to Edinburgh inspired and ready to get to work!
