At Edinburgh University Students' Association, we recognise that some groups in society experience structural oppression - that is to say that they are disadvantaged by a system which prioritises and privileges the lives and experiences of others over their own. This oppression may manifest in discrimination, harassment, violence, economic or legal inequality.
We also believe that while it is important, in the short term, to mitigate the effects that this oppression may have on individuals - for example, by creating women-only spaces or offering bursaries to disadvantaged students - in the long term we must focus on dismantling the hierarchies which allow this oppression to continue. We must liberate ourselves from the structures which are founded on the subordination of groups of people.
That is why we have five Liberation Campaigns - Black and Minority Ethnic (BME); Disabled Students; LGBT+; Trans & Non-Binary; and Women - which sit within our democratic structures. These campaigns exist to create a space where self-defining students can come together, discuss the issues affecting them, and campaign to improve their student experience. If you self-define into any of the four Campaigns and would like to find out more, please visit the links above or sign up to our mailing lists by clicking here.
If you do not self-define into one or any of the Groups but would like to keep up-to-date with their events and campaigns, please like the Liberation Campaigns' Facebook page.
Each Campaign is lead by an Officer who is elected by self-defining students in the Students' Association's annual elections in March; the role of the Officer is to gather feedback from self-defining students, lead on projects and campaigns, and represent self-defining students to both the Students' Association and the University.
The Liberation Officers for 2019/20 are:
- Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Officer: Meyra Çoban
- Disabled Students' Officer: Ellen Blunsdon
- LGBT+ Officer: Rosie Taylor
- Trans and Non-Binary Officer: Elliot Byrom
- Women's Officer: Martha Reilly
