Welcome, sociology lovers!

Whether you’re student, member of staff, or simply happen to harbour a secret crush on Bourdieu or Weber - if you’re interested in sociology, join the Sociology Society for discussions, academic support, film screenings, presentations, social events, and lots more.

Having reformed the society in 2019/20, we aim to offer a vibrant, friendly, and inspiring community open to anyone passionate about exploring the social world around us. We want to facilitate closer links between undergraduate students, postgraduate students and staff at the University of Edinburgh.

The University of Edinburgh Sociology Society (lovingly called SocSoc) hold a number of events both virtually and responsibly in-person including:

  • Virtual pub quizzes
  • Informal academic discussions
  • Film screenings
  • Potlucks and Picnics
  • Online guest lectures
  • Joint events with SocPals and SPS societies

SocSoc welcomes anybody to come and join in with our amazing events!

To keep up with all of our events, check out our Facebook page and Instagram.

Alongside the society, we have developed a new sociological journal – The Panopticon – which has its own Facebook page. The Journal aims to showcase student academic writing in a way that is readable, enjoyable and (most importantly) accessible. New issues will be published each semester so contact if you are interested in getting involved!
