The Edinburgh Student Surgical Society (ESSS) was founded in 2005 to provide extra opportunities, in the field of surgery, to medical students.
We organise regular surgical skills tutorials to facilitate members developing their abilities in surgery. These include beginners and advanced suturing tutorials, laparoscopic skills sessions and tutorials on theatre etiquette. Regardless of career intentions, all graduating doctors need to be able to suture a simple wound and we offer a forum to develop and improve this key skill.
We also organise and host talks and networking events to educate members on the many facets of surgical careers. These include our annual careers evening and women in surgery evening. Coupled with this, we host a national surgical conference each March, providing students with the opportunity to present their surgically relevant research projects, to hear from world renowned surgeons in various fields and partake in workshops to develop surgical skills.
We encourage all our members to take a more active role in surgery and related activities to build their CV and forge a path to a successful future career in surgery.
