The Edinburgh Sport and Exercise Medicine Society (ESEMS) is a student-led society open to all students interested in the fields of Sport, Exercise, and Medicine. As a society, we have a number of goals:

  • The Society puts on a number of interesting talks and tutorials throughout the year, where students can learn about current topics in the field - such as the hot topic of concussion in sport, and how psychology influences athletic performance. There will also be talks from current Sports Medicine doctors on how they got into the field and what career opportunities are available.

  • We provide the opportunity for students to achieve an accredited National Sports First Aid (NSFA) qualification that allows students to act as first aiders in a voluntary and paid role; such students are also given the opportunity to provide first aid for University sporting events.

  • We aim to support students throughout their time at medical school and whilst studying for intercalated degrees in Applied Sports Sciences or Physical Activity for Health.

  • We have a number of connections with the Physical Activity for Health Research Centre (PAHRC) and can put students interested in research in contact with current project supervisors.
