University can be challenging at times for everyone, but it can also be harder when you are LGBTQ+. The LGBTQ+ Peer Mentoring Scheme aims to provide those students with the opportunity to talk to someone who has probably been through some of the things they have in a safe and confidential setting. This can include conversations about gender, sexuality, family, friends, relationships, sex, coming out, homophobia, transphobia, racism, ableism etc.
We are currently recruiting for Peer Mentors to join this mentoring programme and provide online 1-2-1 support for students who identify as LGBTQ+.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who also identifies as LGBTQ+ and would like to play a part in supporting fellow students and to join a network of peer support volunteers across the University.
You can expect the following from this role:
-To be paired with a student who identifies as LGBTQ+ and has requested mentoring support.
-To communicate with your mentee to organise a maximum of 6 online 1-2-1 mentoring sessions per Semester.
-To work with your fellow mentors to organise small group workshops online or other support that you feel would be beneficial to your peers.
You will also receive ongoing support from the Peer Learning and Support team as well as the Welfare and Diversity Coordinator at the University of Edinburgh Students’ Association. This includes:
-Comprehensive mentoring training at the beginning of your role.
-Two to three networking meetings per Semester where you can meet your fellow Mentors and chat to staff.
-Access our volunteer benefits at the Students’ Association such as the Edinburgh Award, Hear recognition and our workshop calendar.
-Opportunity to gain one of the following committee roles: Coordinator, Secretary, Treasurer etc.
If you are interested in getting involved drop us an email at LGBTQ+PeerMentoring@eusa.ed.ac.uk. You can also mention whether you would be interested in a committee role.
If you are a student who is interested in being paired with a Mentor then we will be advertising the matching process very soon. Please keep an eye on this space and the University of Edinburgh Students’ Association Facebook page for further details.
Please note that due to the current safety considerations in relation to Covid-19, all Peer Support will be conducted online until we issue further guidance and guidelines. Training will prepare you to do this and we will communicate and support you to operate under any further changes in the future.
