Accommodation Services

This Association Notes:

That the University’s Accommodation Services is responsible for housing over 5000 students, including the vast majority of first year students

That the University accommodation is available to tourists and others during university holidays

That Accommodation Services has no employee with formal responsibility for issues of sustainability and the environment

That the University currently employs seven staff in its central Entergy and Sustainability Office

That a number of EUSA societies have been campaigning for ‘greener’ student accommodation for a number of years

That a number of very positive steps have been taken by Accommodation Services in recent years

This Association Believes:

That given the number of students in University accommodation, the effect of any environmental policies adopted would be significant

That a considerable amount of unnecessary waste is produced by catering operations as well as from accommodation

That Accommodation Services could benefit from considerable savings if it invested further in energy efficiency measures

That a large number of unnecessary waste is produced by catering operations as well as from accommodation

That University accommodation should reflect the University’s stated commitment to environmental protection

That the University should be working towards relevant awards such as the Green Tourism Business Scheme and the Green Gown Awards

That students, the University and the environment would benefit greatly from a staff member based within Accommodation Services to address these issues and others surrounding sustainability
