Hello, I am Sophie Holt, I am a 49-year-old Australian mature international online student studying MSc IAWEL. I returned to study in 2020 after a 20-year break in study.  I am a mother, a grandmother, a business owner, and a wildlife carer to 12 orphaned baby kangaroos and a wombat.

I understand that sometimes mature students don't speak up or ask questions because we are busy, tired, or we just don't want to be the 'old' person reminiscing about handwritten assignments and struggling to operate a zoom call.

I have learned through this journey of life, that we all struggle with the juggling balls that are study, family, and work. That is why I have put my hand up to be the mature student representative. Not just because I am mature, (I still look for the adult in the room) but because we all have something to contribute. Even if all we can think of at the time is reminiscing about the euphoria of tearing off the perforated sides of a completed assignment printed on the dot matrix at midnight in the basement computer lab.

Honestly, it's not crucial to my education or life that you vote for me. I'm sure there are lots of amazing people out there that are just as capable and probably more amazing.  It is crucial that you vote though.

Having your say is very important. Mature students need a passionate representation so that we are heard. Again, remember to vote, even if it is not for me, vote for anyone you feel deserving.

Your voice is important, you deserve to be heard, we will hear you.
