Usher Hall, December 2018

The Edinburgh University Singers are a small group of auditioned voices, singing a varied programme of music from across the centuries of choral repertoire under the directorship of Calum Robertson. Previously the choir was conducted for 30 years by Dr John Kitchen, University and City organist, and senior music lecturer. Highlights are always the various Christmas concerts, the University Carol Service, and other special events; the choir’s contribution these always elicits much praise from academics and others.

In addition to giving many concerts in both Edinburgh and beyond, Singers have always had an important ‘official’ role in the singing at graduation ceremonies and other significant university events. In the early 1990s we undertook our very first trip abroad– to Salzburg, Austria. Such oversees trips were unusual in those days before cheap flights, and for reasons of expense the travel was by coach, taking two whole days to reach Austria. Trips have continued most years since, and fortunately travelling arrangements have greatly improved. In June 2019, the choir will once again be going on tour, this time to perform in venues across northern Italy, including the cities of Bergamo and Verona.

We sing a diverse range of music, from Scots songs arrangements to large scale choral masses and requiems, as well as concerts with orchestras, including Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, Handel’s Coronation Anthems and Mozart's Requiem. In the 2018-19 academic year our repertoire has included among many things Tippett's Five Spirituals and Cunningham's The Painter's Eye.

Rehearsals are held every Wednesday during term time 7-9pm at St. Cecilia’s Hall, which is usally followed by a social event.

Entry to the choir is by a short informal audition during Welcome Week only. An audition slot can be obtained by signing up at the Activities Fair in Pleasance.
