Edinburgh University Music Society (EUMS) consists of three ensembles with almost 400 members, regularly performing major classical works in venues such as Greyfriars Kirk and McEwan Hall.
Symphony is a fully auditioned symphony orchestra, who, under the baton of Russell Cowieson, perform large-scale orchestral works to a very high standard.
Sinfonia, conducted by Sam McLellan, aims to provide an opportunity for keen string players to get a chance to rehearse and perform with a full scale orchestra without the stress of auditions, whilst also trying to create enough of a challenge for the auditioned woodwind, brass and percussion sections. If you are a string player, grade 6 standard or above, and would like to join Sinfonia, please email our Sinfonia Manager at firstname.lastname@example.org
Chorus is a non-auditioning SATB symphonic chorus, conducted by Neil Metcalfe, and we welcome both students and non-students of all standards as members. If you would like to join please email our Chorus Manager at email@example.com
Following guidance from the Scottish Government and EUSA we will not be holding any in-person rehearsals until restrictions have lifted and it is safe to do so. For the time being we will offer the following to our members:
Symphony and Sinfonia: the chance to take part in virtual chamber music rehearsals and recordings which will be published on our social media channels and website.
Chorus: working in smaller groups to organise, rehearse and record a variety of pieces.
Looking forward to when we can meet again in person, we will work our way towards a full orchestral or choral rehearsal in stages, working from small groups to larger groups and hopefully sometime in the foreseeable future we will be able to come together to safely rehearse with everyone.
Auditions are held during freshers week. This year, due to covid-19 restrictions, we will not be reauditioning existing members of ensembles and therefore we only have some spaces available. These are: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, french horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, violin, viola, cello and double bass. If you would like to audition, please fill out this form (https://forms.gle/32apg7vMNMLdsVG87) and submit a recording of yourself playing for no longer than 5 minutes. Any questions, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or send us a message on facebook.
