Our History

Edinburgh Malaysian Students' Association (EMSA) is a society registered under the Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA), with the majority of our members coming from the 251-strong (and counting!) Malaysian community on campus. Ours is a society that believes in inclusivity - one that Malaysians of all ages, including students, graduates and residents in Edinburgh, are free to connect with. We grew out of a partnership between 3 Universities in Edinburgh, namely the University of Edinburgh, Heriot Watt University and Edinburgh Napier University - and while Heriot-Watt University has gone on to found its own Malaysian society (HMS), our two societies work extremely closely to this day.

We have close ties with Malaysian societies of other universities in the UK. Very often we have activities that give us the opportunity to meet up in different parts of the UK for cultural, sports or entertaining occassions - including various MNights, Regional Malaysian games, as well as joint events with other universities.

Our Mission

To act as a voice of representation of the Malaysian students in Edinburgh.

  1. To provide the necessary help and support that may be needed by Malaysian students in Edinburgh.

  2. To organize events to forge and strengthen friendships between Malaysians within and between universities.

  3. To make known the Malaysian culture in Edinburgh and instil a spirit of patriotism in Malaysian students who are away from home.

  4. To foster a greater understanding of the Malaysian subcultures among members to build greater unity.
