Welcome! We are a society for anyone interested in The Netherlands or the Dutch language (Belgians are more than welcome!) Official since March 2013, we are very much looking forward to years to come. Join us laying the foundations for generations to come!
Our events will include all national Dutch festivities, such as Sinterklaas, King's Day, important football matches, etc. In the case of elections, we might even organise a big Dutch Elections Night! All events are held together by normal socials that are organised about once a month. Of course, as we are such a young society, there is plenty of room for new ideas for events.
The above quote comes from a letter written by the great Dutch author Gerard Reve when he was in Edinburgh for a conference in 1962. He continues: "... They refuse to speak any other language than their own among themselves, even in the presence of their host, and usually complain about the weather and the food." Fifty years later every Dutchman is familiar with these words and has learnt a good lesson from them. There is no need to ignore our society if you don't speak Dutch, we all agree English sounds a lot nicer.
If you are interested in joining us, why not come along to our Welcome Week pubquiz on September 17th, starting at 8 pm UK time. You can sign-up here: www.eusa.ed.ac.uk/events/6001/15241/
Also find us on Facebook!
Hopefully we'll see you at one of our events!
