The Student is a fortnightly independent newspaper produced by students at the University of Edinburgh. It was founded in 1887 by novelist and poet Robert Louis Stevenson, making it Europe’s oldest student newspaper.
Many of The Student’s former writers have gone on to become internationally recognised journalists and politicians (some we’re proud of, some we’re not). Past staff members of The Student include the British politicians Gordon Brown; Lord Steel of Aikwood; Robin Cook; and many of Fleet Street’s reporters and editors.
We publish a variety of work around a range of issues. Whether you are interested in news, the arts, or the countless other topics we publish about, there is a place for you here. The Student is a trusted source of quality journalism for Edinburgh students, by Edinburgh students.
If you are interested in writing, illustrating, photography or design, we would love to hear from you. For info on getting involved, check out https://studentnewspaper.org/get-involved to get an idea of what we are about.
