If you like films, FilmSoc is the society for you!
At Edinburgh University Film Society, we are fans of all kinds of films, from 3-hour war epics, to beautiful documentaries, to trashy romcoms. Whatever your favourite film is, FilmSoc is the place to go to celebrate what makes it good, and argue about what makes it bad (a little healthy debate never hurt anyone - just don't mention The Last Jedi!).
Under normal circumstances, we run a student cinema, showing two films a week that you might not otherwise be able to see in cinemas (for this semester, we had planned to show The Matrix, Parasite, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World and Cinema Paradiso to name just a few). We also run socials, such as pub crawls, film quizzes, and scavenger hunts.
Obviously, with the current situation, a lot of this is not possible, and for now we will not be running screenings. We plan on resuming normal schedules as soon as possible, but this may not be for some time, possibly not until the start of next semester.
With this in mind, we have reduced our membership fees for this semester: Semester 1 membership is free, but full year membership is £5, as this will cover you for Semester 2 when we may be running screenings. We highly recommend getting the full year membership if you are going to be in Edinburgh for that long, as Semester 2 membership prices may be higher, depending on how many screenings we can do.
For this semester, we shall be doing fortnightly Zoom film quizzes on Thursday evenings, Monday evening Zoom meetings to discuss both the workings of the society and whatever film topics come to mind, and more one-off events we are still working on. Follow us on social media to keep updated with our latest events, and don't be afraid to drop us an email if you have any questions!
