What is an URNU?
There are 15 University Royal Naval Units across the UK. They are Royal Navy supported societies open to any university student but are not recruiting organisations.
Being supported by the Royal Navy means that not only will you have access to resources and skills training delivered by Royal Navy personel, but you will also get paid for your time!
What do we do?
Sea Training - We have our own ship, HMS ARCHER a P2000 Patrol Boat. We'll teach you the skills you need to navigate, drive and command the ship and take you away on sea weekends and deployments around the UK and even to Europe.
Events - Cocktail parties aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia, Trafalgar Night Dinners at the Balmoral, themed Charity balls and Burns Night Ceilidhs, Edunburgh URNU hosts a variety of formal and student lead events across the city
Sports - we have six unit sports teams (hockey, rugby, football, netball, bucketball and sailing) which regularly practice throughout the term, culminating in an inter-URNU sports weekend in Portsmouth.
Training - our training programme is designed to give you the skills you need on ship, but also gain recognised qualifications such as first aid and the CMI leadership qualification.
Adventure Training - as part of the Royal Navy, we are awarded funding each year to take part in adventure training. In previous years we have done everything from skiing in the Cairngorms to white water rafting, field gun to go-karting!
Charity and Community Outreach - Each year our student committee selects a charity to support that year and raise money through Charity balls, raffles and fundraising socials to do good works in the community. We also host speakers from the community, help the Scottish Poppy Appeal by selling poppys and parade with the OTC and UAS on Rememberance Sunday.
How much of a commitment is EURNU?
We meet every Wednesday Evening at Hepburn House, East Claremont Street 1900 - 2100, our bar is open straight after training for us to relax and socialise in. Our sea weekends happen once or twice a month, and you will have the oppertunity to go to sea for longer periods during easter break and summer.
Other events happen at weekends throughout the year, and you can partake in as many or as few as you like, focusing around your studies. However, you will find you get a lot more out of the URNU the more you put in, and that the Navy will pay you up to £40 for a whole day for your commitment, even for activities such as skiing and formal dinners.
If EURNU sounds like something you are intrested in, and would like to find out more about what we do follow us on social media (links are at the top of the page). You can message us on facebook, tweet us or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have open evenings at Hepburn House in early February and late September, more details will be posted on our Facebook page and website.
