Sir Andrew Cubie, author of a report which resulted in free university education in Scotland, is now calling for graduates to contribute financially again.

Ten years ago the Cubie report concluded that students should not pay up-front tuition fees. As a result tuition fees were scrapped and the graduate endowment introduced.

The SNP government has since scrapped the graduate endowment. Andrew Cubie has called for a comprehensive review of how universities and students are funded to prevent Scottish universities falling behind those in other countries.

Education experts say the reason for the rise could be a lack of jobs for school-leavers and people looking to retrain following redundancy.
