The number of Scottish students accepted by Scottish higher education institutions increased by 6% in 2009, according to UCAS figures.

A total of 27,194 Scots chose to study in Scotland this year compared with 25, 654 in 2008.

Education experts say the reason for the rise could be a lack of jobs for school-leavers and people looking to retrain following redundancy.
