The Scottish Government has announced that it is providing £8.6m to create an extra 3000 university places this academic year.

The money will be split between student loans, grants and tuition fees. The National Union of Students Scotland, however, said that the money would not cover the cost of the additional places universities have already awarded to satisfy this year's huge surge in applications.
