Nominations open for this year's EUSA Teaching Awards

Nominations Now Open for the 2011-12 EUSA Teaching Awards!

Nominations are now open for this year’s Edinburgh University Students’ Association Teaching Awards! Students can now nominate teaching and support staff and postgraduate tutors as well as students who are involved in ‘peer support’ schemes, for an Award to recognise their excellent work improving students’ learning experience at Edinburgh.

This year sees the introduction of two new Awards:

  • The ‘Supporting Student Learning Award’ seeks to recognise all those staff and students who provide the support network for students learning, including admin staff, IT and technical staff, student support officers and students who are involved in peer support schemes to help other students get the most out of their teaching and learning experience.
  • The Best Research or Dissertation Supervisor Award seeks to recognise the very individual and valuable teaching role of the supervisor at both postgraduate and undergraduate level in helping their students develop their research skills.

Leslie Yellowlees, Head of the College of Science and Engineering, speaking on behalf of the University Principle at the launch of the Awards, praised the contribution of the EUSA Teaching awards to the teaching culture of the University and noted the pride of staff nominated by their students throughout the University.

EUSA VP Academic Affairs Mike Williamson noted that the awards, now in their 4th year, had become a staple in the University calendar, and highlighted the importance of the new awards which make sure that the Teaching Awards enable recognition of all those who support teaching at the University. He announced EUSA’s aim to build on the success of the awards in previous years, and increase the number of nominations from the record 5168 student nominations received last year:

“EUSA's Teaching Awards are an opportunity to recognise the huge contributions to students' learning which happen every day at the University of Edinburgh. The high number of nominations we receive every year is a testament to how grateful students are for staff who go beyond the call of duty day in, day out. This year, with a new look, we're hoping the Teaching Awards will be bigger and better than ever before."

Students can nominate for the excellent teaching and teaching support they receive here.

Nominations will remain open until the 9th of March and Awards will be presented on the 4th April 2012 at an Awards Ceremony in Teviot Row House.

Besides the two awards highlighted above, the other Awards available this year are:

  • Best Feedback
  • Best Director of Studies
  • Innovative Teaching Award
  • Developing Students’ Employability Award
  • Postgraduates Who Tutor Award
  • Best Course and Best Department
  • Awards for excellent teaching in the Humanities and Social Sciences; in Science and Engineering; in Medicine; and in the Veterinary Sciences.

6:18pm on 23 Jan 12 Nominee for Innovative Teaching Award, "and there is a phase called dictyotene but you don't need to worry about the name" (Finnegan, 2011). David Finnegan, his lectures and practicals where outstandingly remarkable and presented in depth, I always understood the concept that was being projected, lectures were always backed up with multiple media platforms. An overwhelming confidence that was always passed on to the student, excellent human relation skills. Always the ladies man with that fantastic smile and off course, a great sportsman and has "la grande" attitude to life. Thank You.

3:01pm on 12 Jan 12 I would like to nominate Human-Animal Relations in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe for the best course award. It is a new course, but extremely well taught and I hope it will continue for years to come. It has given me and most of the other students who have taken it a new perspective and a renewed appreciation of history, and a heightened awareness of the many different aspects of society that may be studied in order to gain a better understanding of the past as a whole. Engaging and inspiring, Human-Animal Relations has been one of the best courses I have taken so far at university.
