Universities Bail Out Students - BBC News

Three-quarters of universities in England have had to bail out students with emergency funding because of delays to loans, suggests a BBC survey.

Among the 58 universities responding to the survey, 49 reported increased hardship payments to students compared with last year.

Figures suggest 70,000 students are still caught up in the delays with student loan processing.


Scholars Strike Back at Economic Impact - The Scotsman

Scholars are striking back at government attempts to turn universities into instruments to improve the economy.

They say that this has been at the expense of research and students.

The campaign, Stand up for Research, is led by the University and College Union.

They see the most recent attack on university research coming from the higher education funding councils, which suggests 25% of the new Research Excellence Framework is to be assessed according to economic social impact.

Star Suckers -The film they tried to ban

STAR SUCKERS is showing at the Filmhouse this weekend (20th-24th November) and the director Chris Atkins is doing a Q&A session exclusively for students in Teviot Writing Room (off the Library Bar) at 6pm on Monday 23rd November. 

The film exposes those in the media who would pay for health records of the rich and famous. 

In the film they caught Max Clifford talking about his clients on undercover camera and just before the release he tried (and failed) to injunct the film, using the now infamous law firm Carter Ruck. 


Edinburgh Revelation Rock-Gospel Choir Concert

Edinburgh Revelation Rock-Gospel Choir is presenting its annual "Winter Concert" on the 27th and 28th of November.

The evening promises fun, respite and of course wonderful singing. The concert will be held at Augustine United Church, on George IV Bridge (right opposite Elephant
House). The doors open at  6:30pm with the concert starting at 7pm.


Singing Box at Potterrow Dome

On November 19th and 20th, in the Potterrow Dome area, we have a Galaxy radio 'Singing Box' in conjunction with X Box's Lips at lunchtime.

You can come along and sing in the box to win a chance to be on the TV during the final of X factor, and win an opportunity to feature in a re-make of Lily Allens 'The Fear' video. There's also more X Box goodies being given away too.

Record turnout at EUSA AGM

Over 650 students turned up for EUSA's Annual General Meeting last night. Seats in George Square Lecture Theatre were filled, whilst over 100 more students were directed to Appleton Tower to take part via a video link.


Edinburgh Students' Association to vote on cigarette sales ban

This year's Annual General Meeting at Edinburgh University Students' Association (EUSA) will discuss a motion which, if passed, would ban EUSA shops from selling cigarettes and ban all cigarette machines on campus.
