Legal Matters

Emergencies

In an emergency, you should always dial 999 and ask for the police. An emergency means someone is in immediate danger, or a crime is happeneing right now. For non emergencies, you can call your local station. We have a dedicated University Policing team, click for more information.

If you have been a victim of a crime and you do no not want to report it to the police, you can report it to us, this is called remote reporting, click for more details.

Is there anywhere I can get legal advice?

The University law school offers free legal advice, visit their webpage for more info.

You may also be able to get advice from Citizens Advice, or come in and speak to an adviser and, if we don’t know the answer, we can point you in the right direction.

My wallet has been stolen, what do I do?

If you haven’t called the police already, that is the first and most important thing for you to do. You  need to cancel any bank or credit cards you had, and replace your matriculation card, which you can do at the helpdesk at the library. If you have no access to money because of this, come in to speak to us and we may be able to issue you a small loan to help you out.

I think I want to take someone to court to reclaim money that is owed to me, can you help?

Taking someone to court should be a last resort, you need to have tried all other reasonable measures to resolve the issue. If you would like to know more about the process you can view our small claims information here.

Where can I go for consumer advice?

You can always come into The Advice Place and we will try and advise you as best we can, but the best place to go would be consumers direct.

What to do if something's stolen

You should report this to the police as soon as possible.  If the theft occurred on University premises or in their accommodation, you should also contact security services or accommodation services.

If you have household contents insurance, you may also be able to make a claim from that, particularly for any larger items such as laptops.
