International Students and

Students who are new to Edinburgh

Welcome to Edinburgh!

Coming to a new place can be overwhelming there are many sources of help, advice and support available to help you settle in and adjust to life in Edinburgh.

Here are some of the reasons students come and see us.

If you have been affected by a situation or event in your home country please click here for specific information.

I have lots of questions and I don't know where to go...

Come and see us in The Advice Place and we will help, if we don't know the answer we will try to help you find someone who does.

Where can I get information about life in Edinburgh?

The International Office works with EUSA to create a number of fantastic guides that can be accessed here.

You can also watch their great video about coming to Edinburgh.

Where can I find out about what the social life will be like and about events?

The International Student Centre is run by international students for students.

You can also join any of the numerous societies here at the University. You can find out all about them at the Societies Centre. Joining a society is a great way to meet people and get involved in Edinburgh life.

Have a look at EUSA Global to see up to date information about how we are celebrating having students from all over the world.

I have questions about my visa, can you help?

We do not give immigration advice in The Advice Place, you need to go and see the International Office at 57 George Square.

You may need to make and appointment if they are very busy or your query is complex.

I am going abroad ( out of the UK) for a break is there anything I need to know?

Again you will need to check with the International Office for details of the re entry conditions on your visa if you are unsure.

Please take extra care of your passport and visa documents whilst you are abroad, if you lose them or they are stolen you will not be allowed to re enter the UK until you have reapplied and recieved a new ones  (this can be a very long process).

You do not need to carry your passport around with you at all times, unless you specifically need it it is better to lock it in your hotel safe.

I need help with my English, where can I go?

Click here for an overview of the language support available.

Tandem is a popular language exchange programme which is designed to help you meet people and learn languages in a fun, relaxed, social environment without tutors, exams or lectures.

Try our language-speed dating, our weekly Language Café, or be matched with a language partner online!

English is not my first language and I would like to get my work proof read before submitting it, can you help?

We have a Peer Proofreading scheme staffed by volunteers. Take a look!

We want you to enjoy your time in Edinburgh and we are here to help if we can.

The University also has information for new students which can be viewed here.
